User Reviews
Sony's Pride, Never Disappoints
I've used many Sony products and the XM5 doesn't let me down either. Comfortable and lightweight for extended wear, weighing only 0.56 pounds. Noise canceling is top-tier, and the ambient mode and auto-pause when speaking are great. Sound quality is excellent across all genres, especially the bass. Quick charging is really fast and 24-30 hour battery is satisfying. Downsides are the high price and it doesn't fold like the previous model. Still, definitely worth the price.
Perfect Upgrade for Travel
Lost my previous version so I upgraded to XM5, and it really doesn't disappoint. It completely blocks airplane noise and conversations. Sound quality is top-notch in highs, lows, and balance, and the lightweight, soft ear cushions make extended wear comfortable. Battery lasts through multiple flight hours. The downside is it doesn't fold like the previous model, making it less compact for carrying. But the case is well-made so it's not a big issue.
Recommended for Older Users
I'm 65 and my hearing isn't as good as younger people, but these headphones are more than sufficient. Battery life is excellent, perfect for PS5 gaming or late-night TV watching. Best for sleep assistance too. Blocks AC, fans, and people talking, so it gets quiet even without playing music. Ears don't get sweaty with extended use, and they're comfortable for long periods. Been using for over 2 years and still works perfectly.
Disappointing PC Connection Issues
After 1 year of use, it's become a frustrating device. PC Bluetooth connection fails 7 out of 10 times, connecting and disconnecting repeatedly. Speak to Chat randomly activates without input, sound drops for 5 seconds when speaking or humming. Ear cups are comfortable and sound quality is decent, but adaptive ANC sometimes lets sound leak through. Headband padding is lacking, hurts after just 1 hour. Only recommend buying on sale.
Amazing Sound from Carbon Fiber Drivers
I've used XM4 and Bose 700, but XM5 is a step above. Dual processor and 8 mics make the ANC insane. 30mm carbon fiber drivers deliver more balanced sound and accurate bass. Supports LDAC and spatial audio, and call quality is significantly improved. Made a call on a noisy street and the other person thought I was indoors. 30-hour battery with 3-minute charge for 3 hours of use. Definitely worth upgrading from XM4 or switching from Bose.
Headphones That Keep the Peace Between Spouses
Even when my wife blasts the TV, I can comfortably listen to audiobooks or classical music nearby. Setting Amazon Music to highest quality, the spatial sound and detail are really impressive. Phone calls work fine regardless of TV noise, battery life is long and charging is fast. I keep Speak to Chat turned off, but the auto-pause when removed and auto-play when worn is the best. Used for over 2 years with no cushion wear, very durable.
Best Value When Bought on Sale
Battery is insane. They say 30 hours but it feels like more. Charged it a month ago and still have 30% left. Comfortable fit, works well even with earrings. ANC is great in noisy places, but doesn't make much difference for normal conversation. Downsides are no Find My tracking like AirPods, and you need to install the app to use it properly. Also shows fingerprints easily.
Compared to B&W
Compared it with B&W Px7 S2. For music, B&W leads in detail and separation, but Sony has a great EQ app and superior microphone performance. Sony is better for video calls and phone calls, and it's much lighter for moving around. Touch controls are good too. ANC is excellent on both. If you want app features, mic, and lightweight, go Sony; if you want sound quality and design, go B&W.
Honest Review from an Audiophile
Bought this as my first ANC headphones. Default sound is bass-heavy and too dark, vocal music isn't great without EQ. Made external EQ profiles and it got much better. ANC is so quiet in the morning it's almost unsettling. No water resistance is a shame, but auto-pause when removed and auto-play when worn is magical. Wired mode isn't as good as other wired headphones.
